"The slave songs are the only surviving memorial of those days agone. A vivid recollection of those times. . .". As this quote implies, African-American music was deeply affected during the years of the Civil War (1861-1865). The black culture was subject to slavehood which tore families apart and brought much sorrow to the people. This sorrow of being in bondage and dissatisfaction with their lives was reflected in their music. African-Americans used music as a main method of expressing themselves. The music of this time was not only of their sorrows, but it also served as signal songs for slaves escaping to freedom in the underground railroad.
