At Oxford, Wilde, in Richard Ellmann’s words, “created himself,” (Hicks 476). Wilde came under the influence of aesthetic innovators such as English writers Walter Pater and John Ruskin. The Literarae Humaniores of “Greats” program that Wilde studied at Oxford centered on the history, philosophy, and literature of ancient Greece, particularly the work of Plato- but he did not limit himself to its requirements.
While attending Oxford, Wilde was exposed to most of the major intellectual controversies of the day, for the university was constantly a site of considerable questioning.
