Perceived Characteristics of American People




Whether or not a person was born in the United States, and lived there all of their life, may determine how they view American society and it’s people. Certain characteristics of Americans may be looked at in different ways depending upon who is doing the looking. Someone not born here may not understand certain traits of American culture in comparison to someone who was born in America and understands that this is their natural way of life. In order to investigate this more I interviewed two women who both gave me examples of good and bad characteristics of American people. ... She went on to tell me a few things that she found to be good and bad characteristics of American people. ... The doctors here treat people with more respect, while in India they are not friendly or respectable to others. ... She appreciates the American doctors friendliness and patience towards her. Besides the doctors being friendly, she also thinks that Americans are pleasant people to be around. ... Usually the only people that speak to each other out in public are friends, family, or neighbors.
Along with the good characteristics she had a few characteristics that she saw as not so good. The first bad thing Mary mentioned to me about American’s was the fact that she felt some of them were lazy. ... She realizes that over here friends of the same sex can’t walk in the mall or park together holding hands, because people will misjudge them and think that they are a homosexual couple. ...
Mary feels that American families are not as family oriented as Indian families. ... Besides being American herself she has dealt with many different Americans through her job as well as the Indian woman. During Lisa’s interview she had many things to say about Americans, but we narrowed them down specifically to three good and three bad characteristics.
Lisa felt that one of the best characteristics of Americans is that they are very hardworking individuals.
