... There is a debate between groups of specialists about what has caused the change in the consumption levels and work schedules of Americans, their own free will or their surroundings. In Juliet Schor’s essay “The Insidious Cycle of Work and Spend,” she presents readers with her socialist’s views of the “deceitful” American economy. ... She believes people work longer hours to make more money, so that they can go and buy more material things to fill their needs. I agree with her on the basis that people work more in order to earn more money, but I disagree with the fact that wanting more in life is a bad thing. ... If people do not have a goal to work towards, what will drive them to excel? ... She is saying that business and media force people to work hours at jobs that they do not want to, and buy products that are not necessary for everyday life. ... When it comes to work, there are many different occupational opportunities for men and women. Most people do have choices in where they work and can sign contracts with employers about the hours worked each week. Also, some people can choose to work more or less.
