Villagers

Villagers gather together in the central square for the annual lottery. There is much excitement and interest as the rituals of the event start. The familiar discussion of current and everyday happenings in village life is including commentary on the traditional and modern ways of holding the lottery, as well as the particularities of this year's one… Jackson seems to be conveying two main messages in this story. First she is telling us that the idyllic life we imagine to be present in America, "the good old days", has terrible secrets. She is telling us about the horror that supports the "good" life, too.
