Affirmative action is a social policy adopted by various levels of government and private employers that functions as a response to the civil rights movement, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and other legislation. Affirmative action policies are intended to redress decades of racial discrimination in societal institutions by opening the doors to minorities into venues previously closed to their entry. Affirmative action claims to reverse the ever-present horrid effects of our historic past of slavery and segregation.
