What are the Pros and Cons of the First past the Post System?
First of all the first past the post system is what is used here in Britain and in many other places around the world. ...
Pro’s
· Our electoral system is very clear and easy for voters to understand. ... In places such as Northern Ireland the electoral system known as the single transferable vote can get too complicated and voters may be put off by the complexity and just not bother voting.
· The first past the post system produces stability within parliament. ...
· Our electoral system keeps out the small very right wing parties which have ludicrous and stupid policies. Our system keeps out these parties because the party will never get enough to get a majority and therefore will never get a seat and will never get a say in the running of the country. ...
Con’s
· There are many cons but the most important one is that there is no proportional representation which is unfair to smaller parties and the system is not equal. ... So as I mentioned the system discriminates against the smaller parties such as the liberal democrats because the party gets a lot of votes but never enough to get a majority. Examples of the system being very unfair and not equal is in the 1983 elections where labour got 27% of the votes and the liberal democrats got 25% but labour won 209 seats and the liberals only got 23 seats.
