Over the past 40 years Australia has encountered a number of constraints that have limited its ability to achieve its foreign policy objectives. ... But also as other nations pursued globalisation, some foreign policy programs had a detrimental effect on our trade with the region. ... The Bali Bombings was an opportunity to create closer relations with Indonesia after Australias intervention in East Timor but has proved to be a constraint because of Australian leaders issuing travel warnings to the area. It is from things such as these that we can see that Australian FP has encountered a number of constraints. ... As a consequence of this Australia has often had to compromise its foreign policy for other larger nations that it relies on for support such, as the USA. ... This concern held by nations such as Indonesia and Malaysia is stopping Australias admittance to beneficial NGOs like ASEAN in the region which harms their ability to achieve foreign policy goals such as incorporation into the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA). This reliance on powerful friends is constraining Australias economic foreign policy goals in the region by demonstrating Australia still sees its security underwritten by a GAPF, rather than through integration with the region. ... An example of this was the Australian led INTERFET force in East Timor in 1999.
