What is affirmative action and who benefits? In September 1965 President Johnson signed Executive Order 11246 granting affirmative action. This program was basically was set up to benefit minorities, but there was evidence that women were discriminated, and as a result this program was re-enacted to include women in 1970. ...
Since its inception in 1970, affirmative action program has been a major political issue and recently has come under attack by conservative groups who feel that the concept has become outdated. On the contrary, affirmative action program should not be outlawed because this program is useful to prevent discrimination and inequality in employment. Until the late 70’s women have been the subjects of discrimination and inequality in employment. ... Women were also economical disadvantage, which can be associated with meager wages and dead–end jobs that provides the least satisfaction. ... For years women struggled for equality with men because they felt thy were not adequately represented in the workplace. When there was clear evidence that women were not represented fairly in the labor market, affirmative action program took effect to provide equality for women. It is true of course, that affirmative action may be seen as granting preferential treatment to a certain gender, but this program is necessary to prevent discrimination when there are evidences that there is disparity between the genders.
