The article “Trade policy and the politics of access to drugs” by Caroline Thomas is fundamentally about trade policies and access to drugs and how these two issues are being tackled among nations, particularly between developing and developed countries. The author uses the trade of and access to anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs to advance this hypothesis. ... ), are responsible for high prices of patented ARV drugs, which HIV/AIDS sufferers in developing countries (i. ... being stated specifically in this case), are restraining developing countries from legally purchasing ARV drugs at affordable prices under the WTO Trade Related Intellectual Property (TRIPS) agreement . In the latter part of the article, the author explains various points (which we will be touching on later on this essay) as to why developed countries oppose the acquisition or use of cheap drugs by developing countries. In conclusion of her article, the author talks about “global governance” and the possible actions international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) might undertake in response to the unfortunate predicament of developing countries with respect to trade policies and access to drugs.
