As he promised during the presidential election, in five days after he entered the White House, President Clinton established Task Force on National Health Reform to prepare the Health Security Reform bill. ... Later when Moynihans committee began to consider the bill, he changed his attitude, and produced a bill which resembled President Clintons proposal, though much of the core part was quite different. ...
They not only criticized the Presidents plan, but they presented their own bill¡ªMcDermott-Wellstone bill, sponsored by Rep. ... The bill would create "a Canadian-style system, nationalizing the health insurance industry by instituting a universal coverage plan under which the government would collect premiums and pay providers."

"What I am proudest of is, at the darkest moment of the health care debate, when all Republican pollsters were saying to us: It is political suicide to take on the health care bill straight on, . ... I stood up and said the Clinton health care bill is going to pass over my cold, dead political body. My body is still alive, and the Clinton health care bill is deader that Elvis. He may be back, but the Clinton health care bill is not coming back.
