Dinkins attended Howard University where he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated at Beta Chapter in 1946 and graduated magna cum laude in 1950. Upon graduation from Howard, he furthered his education at Brooklyn Law School in 1953, advanced to joining Dyett and Phipps Firm in 1956, a year later changing it to Dyett, Alexander, and Dinkins Firm, and then proceeded to run for mayor of New York City.
