Defining Terror

The phrase “one person’s terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter” is an indication of the subjective nature of the word terrorism. What is the distinction between a terrorist and a freedom fighter? Between a martyr and a murderer? From individuals to countries to international organizations, everyone defines terrorism according to their own values and in a manner that supports their interests. One of the first attempts to define terrorism came from the League of Nations Convention in 1937. Terrorism was defined as “all criminal acts directed against a State and intended or calculated to create a state of terror in the minds of particular persons or a group of persons or the general public.” More recently a short legal definition was proposed by A.
