Freedom of Speech
Universities across America have been facing a growing problem of hate and offensive speeches that have been occurring on campuses. After reading several articles in Texts & Contexts, I have discovered that many Universities are trying to place limitations on freedom of speech in order to protect students from being offended. ... Limiting free speech will not allow us to think for ourselves, since our thoughts will be blocked from expression. We should not place speech codes on campuses, since they can violate First Amendment rights and student’s thought process and communication which bring inspiring ideas, discoveries and other positive opinions may never come in our learning community.
The First Amendment of the Constitution states that people have the freedom of speech, which means that students have a basic right to express themselves throughout speaking. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances” (The Constitution).
