GUN LAWS=LOWER CRIME? I must start by saying that my original paper was going to be on the increase in gun control laws and the views of government agencies. ... I had asked if each agencies new the total number of laws inplace and new ones being pushed. I then asked each one what there specific agencies take and opinion was on gun control and if they supported more control. ... I was told by the ATF “this agency has no opinion on current laws or legislation being pursued. The ATF acts only within the laws currently in place. ... From this point I have decided to change my paper to that of with the increase in gun laws has there been a decrease in not just murders, but of violent crimes as well. My initial thought was that crime and murder with a firearm would had to have declined due to all the added laws we have on the books. It is amazing how private anti-gun groups collect and report their statistics. ... The big difference was that they did not separate the crime types. The group used the FBI report on “four measures of serious violent crime” which in this report does not identify types/weapons used or if any were used at all. ... From what I have been able to gather for statistics from agency reports, actual gun violence has come down after the 1993/1994 years. ... One of the new laws directly affected me. ... It was not that I needed this gun right that day. I thought these laws were in place to catch criminals and the "bad" types, NOT ME! I did get the gun without a problem, but it was the idea that I was being lumped in that category of someone needing to be checked up on. |
