Using Microsoft® SharePoint™ Portal Server 2001, Nucor Corporation is providing its 8300 employees with the ability to find, share, and publish information across traditional divisional boundaries. After considering solutions from several leading portal vendors, the company selected SharePoint because it offered greater functionality at a significantly lower cost and because it could be flexibly customized and extended using the company's existing Microsoft skill set. Every user accessing Nucor's SharePoint portal enjoys a personalized start page, along with one-stop access to the wealth of expertise and information scattered across the company's 23 operating divisions. These new capabilities will help Nucor realize increased operational efficiency and an improved bottom line, by ensuring that every employee can find the information needed to share best practices, reduce operational costs, and ultimately make better decisions. Company Overview Nucor Corporation is the largest steel producer in the United States. It ranks 373rd in the Fortune 500, with annual sales of $4.5 billion in 2000. Nucor's products include carbon and alloy steel in bar, beam, sheet and plate forms; steel joist girders; steel deck; cold finished steel; metal building systems; steel fasteners; and light gauge steel framing. Over half of Nucor's revenues result from sales to the construction industry, with the remainder coming from consumer products and automobile manufacturers. Nucor has close to 8300 employees across 23 operating divisions in ten states. The company also has a highly decentralized management structure: each operating division is responsible for its own P&L, with most operating decisions made at the divisional general manager level or below. Within each operating unit, decisions are pushed down to the lowest possible level-often all the way to the shop floor, where a large portion of Nucor's collective expertise resides. Business Challenge Nucor needed a better way for its people to find and share information, especially across divisional boundaries. "In a decentralized organization such as ours, it's crucial that the appropriate information is available when and where people need it," said Scott Messenger, Nucor's corporate IT manager.
