Hobbes Locke Emerging Social Order of America

Social contract theorists Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, along with Abigail Adams and the Founding Fathers of the Constitution, all held contrasting views of society and the human individual’s involvement in the development of an emerging social order; however, the welfare of children in each of their periods of time was a far less debated topic for a myriad of reasons. ... The comprehensive theories and notions of Hobbes, Locke, Adams and the Founding Fathers pertaining to the social issues of their generations are essentially timeless, and examining their beliefs can give us an idea of how they would’ve responded to the various problems children are facing today.
Thomas Hobbes’ The Leviathan goes into immense depth about the definition and development of a Commonwealth and the reasons behind its introduction; in chapter 17, he discusses the passionate characteristics of man in the State of Nature and how that passion will inevitably lead to war if an all-powerful sovereign is not employed to keep order in the Commonwealth. Also of interest in chapter 17 was Hobbes’ observation of the contrasts in behavior of men and living creatures, as he concurs with Aristotle in his theory that living creatures perform acts for the improvement of their entire society, while men naturally act with their own self-interests at heart and need a higher power to “direct their actions toward the common benefit “(Hobbes, Leviathan 651). In the case of protecting child interests, Hobbes would most likely give the Leviathan powers to enforce the importance of education and give financial support to teaching institutions while requiring scholars of the Commonwealth to complete at least two years of pedagogy in their field of specialty.
