while i don’t think that the house of lords is perfect it does act as an effective check against policies from the house of commons. being unaccountable does have the advantage of allowing the lords to make decisions individually, rather than ones they are told to make. ... how many members of the house of lords, have to worry about the price of baked beans? ... in the lords while this system operates, the current occupants of the chamber, are safe in that nothing can be done to remove them, whatever decision they make. ... the power to delay decisions, or embarrass the government is not something that should be ignored or forgotten.
