Head v. Heart
Of late, my responses to questions of the political vein have been passionate, but ultimately contradicting. For instance, I’m torn between deeply rooted patriotic loyalty and a more intellectual sense of liberalism. With these feelings, I can identify with America as a whole, which has flip-flopped between the patriotic fervor inspired by the September 11th attacks and the neo-hippie craze borne from the war in Iraq. My major dilemma with choosing a side is that both causes seem mostly insincere. For example, while I was touched by the poignant display of American flags for the weeks following 9/11, the commercialism that evolved from and preyed on this display of American spirit did nothing less than disgust me.
