In his article, “How Trade Impacts U.S. Jobs and the War on Terrorism,” Howard LaFrenchie explores the current issues surrounding U.S. job losses and the arguable link between terrorism and international trade or more specifically, the trade between borders. ... Further, he suggests that if those countries were given better trade agreements, a commercial treaty between two or more nations, terrorism would have less of a chance to survive in those countries. The reasoning behind this idea is that those developing countries would do a better job of policing terrorist groups within their borders if they knew that their own prosperity, which would then be linked to international trade, would be in jeopardy if they were found to be harboring terrorists.

LaFrenchie points out that the Bush administration is well aware of the importance most Americans place on stopping current job losses and the impact an international trade agreement could have on further job losses. The Bush administration has to be particularly careful about how it approaches current trade negotiations because the 2004 presidential elections are fast approaching. If Bush makes concessions in current trade talks that are perceived to negatively impact American jobs, Bush will not likely recover popularity in time for the next elections.
