The mechanisms of how nonviolence can affect violent actors, authorities and governments will be explored and explained. How a nonviolent movement can lead an authoritarian or unjust system to lose support inside and outside the country, and how nonviolence can be a tool for large-scale social change, or of the empirical confirmation of an international presence as a deterrent to violence and of an increased capacity for national forgiveness and reconciliation, will be analyzed. ... Chapter 3 – Nonviolence and international relations This chapter will explore the role and potential of nonviolence in international relations. ... The role of local nonviolent movements and their capacity to have a national, regional and world impact will be looked at together with the role of nonviolent diplomacy and peace politics: the possibility for nonviolence on the level of states in international relations, as well as the role and growing involvement of citizens and non-state actors in global politics. The chapter will also explore how modifications of national policies may affect the international scene.
