The arms trade is the largest business in the world today currently producing 800 billion dollars a year. ... The small arms trade in West Africa has led to the increase of violence within the conflicts plaguing the international community and many neighboring countries feel that these weapons may soon spread into their territories causing their countries to soon also become chaotic. Since the United States of America, many ASEAN countries, China, the Arab Group and South Africa have refused to abide by commitments and regulations for the arms trade and the issue seems that it is not being dealt with. The problem of the small arms trade is increasing as the supply and demand from both developed and developing countries for these weapons also augments over time as more conflicts start to rise in nations. ... The United Nations in December of 1999 decided that it was time to organize a conference that would cover the issue of small arms trade and light weapons. From the ninth until the twentieth of July in 2001, officials from more than 140 countries agreed to many different solutions on what do to with decreasing the illicit arms trade, at the Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects. During this conference many developed countries such as the United States of America and France discussed and considered on how to control the illicit sales of arms in many black markets around the globe. ... The United Nations has also had trouble when dealing with refugees because of armed groups and therefore has set the issue of small arms and light weapons trade on the international political agenda.
