History has presented Thomas Jefferson with the opportunity to be known as a great liberator. ... Jefferson, in a historical context was seen as a great liberator, he was the man who played a huge role in race relations in America, and had arguments for both the pros and cons of slavery, but even so after his death, slavery still was an issue of great concern and Douglass, a man who was born of slave, and overcame hardships used Independence Day to remind Americans of liberties unfinished business. In this Essay, I will use Douglass a man born into slavery, and someone who experienced its cruelties firsthand, to try to portray that Jefferson, who was seen as a great liberator, helped to make the situation for Africans somewhat better, but still supported the slave trade.
In the Declaration of Independence, it was written by our founding fathers, that all men were created equal, and have certain and inalienable rights, of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. ... He states that Independence Day, a day celebrated by whites for liberties, is a day mourned for Blacks. ... He uses the Declaration of Independence as a basis for his argument, but doesn’t mention Thomas Jefferson, a writer for the Declaration, and his views on slavery. It is important to consider Jefferson’s, outlook on the slave trade, and his historical image as a liberator to the Africans, while in essence he still supported the slave trade, and saw many reasons for its uses.
