Response to “Letter From Birmingham Jail”
On Good Friday April 16th, 1963, 53 blacks, led by Rev. ... , marched into downtown Birmingham to protest the existing segregation laws. ... While imprisoned in the Birmingham city jail King came across a letter that appeared in the Birmingham Newspaper from eight Alabama clergymen (Bishop C. ... Ramage and the Reverend Earl Stallings) condemning the demonstrations in the streets of Birmingham. ... Martin Luther Kings “Letter from Birmingham Jail” strives to justify the desperate need for nonviolent direct action, the absolute immorality of unjust laws together with what a just law is, as well as, the increasing probability of the “Negro” resorting to extreme disorder and bloodshed, in addition to his utter disappointment with the Church who, in his opinion, had not lived up to their responsibilities as people of God.
In Martin Luther King Junior’s letter "Letter From Birmingham Jail" the clergymen pointed out, in their letter to King, seven points criticizing Kings demonstration, and they are the following: (1) King is an outsider and he had no business in Birmingham, (2) King was unwise with his actions, (3) King was untimely, (4) King has no respect for the law, (5) King’s actions could have led to violence, (6) King is an extremist, (7) and the police in Birmingham did a good job dealing with the demonstration.
