English 101 Kristen McKellar
Letter from Birmingham Jail
In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. and a band of 53 protesters marched into downtown Birmingham, Alabama protesting the segregation laws. ... In response the demonstration eight of the town’s clergymen drafted a letter appealing to the African-American population which was posted in the town’s local newspaper. Rebutting to the letter, while in his jail cell, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter to the clergy men. “The Letter from Birmingham Jail” is known universally as a turning point in the African-American civil Rights movement. This letter is written very precisely and each point from the clergymen is rebutted with the black’s perspective.
King begins his letter by stressing the importance of drafting a non-violent campaign; he outlines the campaign with four major ideas: the collection of facts to assure there is injustice taking place, negotiation, self purification, and direct action.
