Mercy Killing: Here to Stay or Go Away?

Euthanasia has been a “hot topic” of debate for many years now. Everyone has his or her own opinion on this controversial and oh so delicate matter. There doesn’t yet seem to be a general consensus on whether mercy killing is right or wrong, morally or legally, which is what keeps this issue in the news. An article in Newsweek, “Terminal Care: Too Painful, Too Prolonged”, by Geoffrey Cowley and Mary Hager relates the stories of two terminally ill, hospitalized patients and shows the emotional struggles and individual frustration of each family. The article also refers to a study published in a well-known magazine, backing up their claim that “American medicine lacks any conception of death as a part of life” (646). Cowley and Hager feel that sometimes patient’s preferences are disregarded while doctors and nurses prolong the slow death of their patients because they are so driven to sustain life. A related essay by Stephanie Gutmann, “Death and the Maiden” published in The New Republic, attacks Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the best-known proponent of assisted suicide.
