Why are alcohol and tobacco legal while marijuana is illegal? All three are recreational substances. Alcohol and tobacco are physically addictive and marijuana only psychologically addictive. All three are detrimental to our health but only alcohol and tobacco have ever killed anyone. This being the case, why are alcohol and tobacco so widely approved and marijuana considered taboo? There are many reasons for marijuana’s intolerance such as anti-drug campaigns but these campaigns are biased. Many of the arguments the government makes in these campaigns for marijuana’s illegality also work for alcohol and tobacco. This is inconsistent and raises the point that if alcohol and tobacco are legal marijuana should be too. Alcohol can ruin families and I know it. Alcohol is responsible for my parents’ divorce. My father is a recovering alcoholic and alcohol has given him some minor health problems. When my parents were married my father would come home drunk and get into especially vicious verbal arguments (my dad is a lawyer) with my mother. However, I know of no instances where this has been the case with marijuana. Take my friend Caleb for example; his father is an avid pot smoker. He is not an alternative hippie father, as the stereo-type would lead you to believe; he is a chemist who lives in a suburban development house. Caleb’s father has been happily married for 20 years and almost every night when he comes home he smokes some pot and watches T.V.
