By the end of the 1850s, America was a nation divided. The large and growing rift between the northern industrial economy and the primarily agrarian one in the south, had polarized the country into two distinct political entities. Pervasive in all contentious issues of the time, was the conflict between the interests of slave states versus those of non-slave states. Attempts were made to alleviate the growing tension. However, measures such as the Missouri Compromise and The Kansas-Nebraska Act could not hold back the tide. It was Lincoln’s victory of the 1860 election (based almost purely on the northern vote) that set the stage for war. The American Civil War would end up being the most costly war in American history, in which some 620 000 American soldiers would lose their lives. Surprisingly, in a war which began over the issue of slavery, astonishingly few Union soldiers entered the war with any concerns about slavery whatsoever. In fact, nobility was very seldom the cause of the typical Union soldier. Instead, they were driven by vanity. The Civil War was to be like no other war the world had ever seen. Northern men enlisted by the thousands, with notions of Napoleonic style warfare or that of the Revolutionary War.
