The speech gIfve been to the mountaintop,h written by Martin Luther King Jr. was presented in Mason temple in Memphis, Tennessee. The speech was given April 3, 1968. This was the day before Kings assassination. The temple was bursting with his followers, and most of them were involved in the sanitation strike. He not only spoke to the people who were involved, but through television, he spoke to the American people, the congress, and the president. Martin Luther King Jr. came to give this speech to the people of Memphis to keep their hopes up. They had been long ignored, and wanted to get the same respect that the white professionals did. They were underpaid, and unappreciated for the amount of labor they did. The people were striking for union recognition, dues deduction, a meaningful grievance procedure, and age improvements. King came to support them, and tell them how much they deserved the rights they were fighting for. They deserved respect. The labor strike began on February 12th and lasted sixty-five days till April 16th. There were 1300 members in the SCME local 1733 (union number). They were striking to end racial discrimination in promotion and job assignments. They were once again fighting to be equal citizens. Something they had been fighting for their entire lives. They just wanted to be equal. In Memphis, the gMemphis USAh which was started by SCMA helped to obtain funds for the striker and their families. As a community in order to tell the managers that they were serious they boycotted the city merchants. No one bought anything from the stores. Dr. Martin Luther King had his roots in a middle class society in Atlanta. He grew up to follow in his fathersf footsteps, and became a minister. He was a very well educated man, with big aspirations. He is the worldfs best-known advocate of non-violent social change strategies. He was the leader of the civil rights movement, and left his mark worldwide. King even won the Nobel Peace Prize. He was one of the greatest men of his time. By his death in 1968 he had become respected by all most people. He was exceptionally good with the people in the movement, and respected by the rest of the world, because of what he was doing. Before his death, his main goal was only to continue moving forward with colored rights.
