Patriotism by Yukio Mishima

In “Patriotism” by Yukio Mishima, Lieutenant Shinji Takeyama chooses to commit suicide because he does not want to bring any dishonor on himself or his family and because he is committed to his role as a soldier in his country. Shinji knows that the next day will bring an Imperial ordinance ordering him to attack the rebelling troops, many of which are his friends, but Shinji declares to Reiko, “I can’t do it.” The consequences of acting out this statement—of failing to carry out the orders of an Imperial ordinance—would surely bring dishonor to Shinji, therefore bringing dishonor to all his family.
