The Patriot Act was formed by the administration of President George W. ... The Patriot Act was designed to allow government agencies to more effectively fight terrorism, but unfortunately they also strip American citizens of constitutional freedoms like unlawful search and seizure, or being detained without ever being charged or even their right to an attorney. The Patriot Act is a clear violation of civil liberties and contrary to the ideals the United States of America was founded upon. ... The United States federal government has passed the Patriot Act in a attempt to gain more control over what the citizens can do in our daily lives. It is because of this reason that I don’t approve of the Patriot Act and think that it should be overturned and the Bush administration chastised for ever bringing it to the light of day. The Patriot Act was passed on October 26, 2001 just forty six days after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D. ... It is felt by many in both the public arena and in the lower levels of state government that the Patriot Act was passed too quickly during a state of fear and panic in the country (“Protecting Civil Liberties” 1). Mitchell 2 Wisconsin Republican Congressmen James Sensenbrenner is leading a bipartisan group in Congress to make sure the Patriot Act doesn’t become permanent as the Bush administration would like. The Bush administration recently proposed a new bill called the Patriot II which is basically the Patriot Act plus it gives the government more authority then the first Patriot Act. Recently Sensenbrenner said, “The Patriot Act will be made permanent over my dead body.” Congressman Sensenbrenner is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and points out that the Justice Department headed by Attorney General John Ashcroft has refused to disclose any information on the Patriot Act and how it is being used. ... Now the Patriot Act also has good aspects in that it allows government agencies like the Federal Beauru of Investigations and the Central Intelligence Agency to share intelligence on investigations they are conducting. Now if the Patriot Act gives government agencies the ability to share information then why isn’t the Justice department giving out any details on how the Patriot act is being used? ... Most feel there is no reason to make the Patriot Act permanent now, when there is still two and a half years before the law expires. (The expiration date on the Patriot Acts is December 31, 2005). ... Many Congressmen felt that by the time the law expired the situation on terrorism could be more thoroughly evaluated and then we could judge whether or not the Patriot Act was necessary. ... The Patriot Acts require that we trust law enforcement agencies like the police and the FBI or CIA, but what we must remember is that law officials’ sense of doing the right thing is influenced when they know that there is a government agent watching over their shoulder. ... Mitchell 4 The level of disapproval for the Patriot Acts can be better seen on the lower levels of State and City government. In Arcata, California for example the city council has gone so far as to outlaw voluntary compliance to the Patriot Acts. |
