Introduction

What is the Power Elite? ... Wright Mills came up with this notion of a power elite that runs our country. ... Who is the power elite? Mills states this group consists of the top leaders of the largest corporations, the most powerful generals and admirals of a military, and certain elite politicians like the president and his cabinet, and select members of Congress who chair the major committees. ... Mills states that even within this power elite group, there is a hierarchy. The most powerful group is the corporate leaders because our economy is based on capitalism, and so the other members of the power elite would follow the corporate leaders.
Mills came up with this idea in 1956, but I wondered how much of this theory would college students buy into? Most do not know of the power elite theory so without revealing it, I took some of the principles of the power elite and made a survey which I administered to 68 college students at Rose State College enrolled in Sociology. ... With this select sample I will answer the question; does the average college student believe in a power elite?

Better Understanding the Power Elite
“The powers of ordinary men are circumscribed by the everyday worlds in which they live, yet even in these rounds of job, family, and neighborhood they often seem driven by forces they can neither understand nor govern.” (Mills, pg 3)

The power elite maintains power through force and cohersion as they are trained to do. ... They are molded to mold us to keep them in power. ... The power elite controls most of the wealth in the country. ... First, all the employees of Ford and GM would be thrust into the job market. ... The CEO’s of these companies hold great power, for there business not only affects the people they employ, but it affects the whole nation, and even parts of the world. ... 1)

How does these elite become elite? ... One is born and bred to become elite. The elite grow up in wealthy families. They are sent to private schools that teach them to become elite and also introduce them to other future elite. ... Those who sit in the seats of the high and the mighty are selected and formed by the means of power, the sources of wealth, the mechanics of celebrity, which prevail in their society. ... 361)

The elite breed and raise their children to become elite. And the elite all seem to fit into the same mold. Today the power elite is not just white males as they were in Mills day, but represent males and females of various races. ... ” (Mills, pg 344)

Mills sensed that morality was slipping from the power elite of his day.
