Some facts about prisons that I think you all should know: -NY spends more on state prisons than state colleges -it costs $32,000 to keep an inmate in a NY prison for a year -since 1980 in NY the # of women entering state prisons is up 400%, double the rate of men -since 1981 NY state has added over 46,000 prison beds at a capital cost of more than $4.5 billion -more prison space is being used up by drug offenders and less is being used by violent crime offenders -The US currently has the largest incarcerated population in the world with 2 million -We need to take a look at incarceration costs, violence, and crime in general to get a comprehensive view. |
