The threat of a federal election because govenments and the Australian people cannot decide what to do over the issue of Native Title sums up why it is that Australian needs genuine reconciliation with its native people. A real basis for the healing process of reconsiliation will be based on the fact that we (meaning White Australians owe our Aboriginal people generations of goodwill. (Hughes-DAeth, 1997)
This healing process implies acknowledging that the Aboriginal people have been mistreated. ... In addition, reconciliation means allowing a free and reasoned debate of the issues involved in land rights-this requires genuine information, and a realeducation of everyone involved. ... Austalians must know about and acknowledge this history, not condone it by claiming that Aborigines may well have performed brutal acts simply lets us see that they are human-like the rest of hom sapiens they are capable of cruelty.
