Roe vs. Wade
On January 22, 1973, a 25-year-old single woman won a Supreme Court case that legalized abortion across the United States. Under the pseudonym "Jane Roe" , Norma McCorvey challenged the criminal abortion laws in Texas, which forbade abortion except in cases were the mothers life was in danger, claiming they were unconstitutional. Henry Wade was the Texas Attorney General who defended the anti- abortion law. ... Denounced by the National Council of Bishops, the decision gave rise to a vocal antiabortion movement that put pressure on the courts and created an anti-Roe litmus test for the judicial appointments of the Reagan and Bush administrations.
