Racial profiling can be defined as the use of race either as the sole purpose or one element in a group of reasons that justify traffic stops, border searches, or airport detentions. ... ” Although this is a disheartening story, I do believe and plan on proving that one does not have to be a racist to be guilty of racial profiling. One question to be asked is does racial profiling really exist, or is it just an exaggerated myth? ... The American Civil Liberties Union says this kind of profiling is acceptable; the problem arises with cases dealing with class probability. ... This is the kind of racial profiling has been proven to exist. ... This proves that not only is racial profiling in existence, the police are knowingly doing it. The first ideas of racial profiling cannot be traced back to just one source there are many contributing sources. For the most part racial profiling starts with the basic stereotypes. ... This marks the root of racial profiling; all the stereotypes start to seem factual which result in those groups being “profiled” to try and lessen crime rates and drug traffic. ... The police are very much guilty of racial profiling; there are numerous horror stories of this happening. ... Sgt Mike Lewis, a Maryland state police officer, has been under a lot of pressure after admitting he racial profiles. ... Although Lewis admits he racial profiles, he does not think of himself as a racist. ... There are others that also defend racial profiling as nothing more than sensible police technique, where police employ the laws of probability to make the best use of their scarce resources in attacking crime. As said in “The Practice of Racial Profiling”, “The police engage in the practice for reasons of simple efficiency: a policeman who concentrates a disproportionate amount of his limited time and resources on young black men is going to uncover far more crimes and therefore be far more successful in his career than one who biases his attention toward, say middle-aged Asian women.
