Born on February 6, 1911 in Tampico, Illinois, America’s favorite actor and governor, Ronald Reagan, was elected to President by the American people in 1981. A bigger-than-life screen actor and television personality, Ronald Reagan moved from being Governor of California in the 1960’s to President of the United States and dominating American politics to become the leader of a free world in the 1980’s. ... ”
As an adolescent, Ronald Reagan had always been a leader. ... At a nearby Eureka College, where he enrolled in 1928 on a partial football scholarship, Reagan majored in Economics and Astronomy. ... After graduation, Reagan became a radio sportscaster at WOC in Davenport, Iowa, for $10 a game. By 1936, Reagan earned a substantial salary as the popular voice of Major League Baseball. Reagan soon listened to his friends persuade him into film, instead of radio, and soon was offered a sever year contract with Warner Brothers. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Reagan, who had been serving as a second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve, which he had to join in the 1930’s in order to ride army horses on weekends, was called on active duty for three years. ... Back in Hollywood in 1945, Reagan landed a few good parts, appearing on a number of television programs. ... In 1952 he met his soon-to-be wife, Nancy Davis, who some observers credited for Reagan’s strong switch from a Democrat to a Republican. Reagan was soon one of the most widely recognized Republican activists in the nation and soon ran for President.
President Reagan’s election occurred in 1981 and the strategy of Détente was often used to describe the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. The denotation of the word Détente is defined as relaxation or reduction of tension between nations, Reagan thought to believe that the leader of the Soviet Union was interpreting Détente as “freedom to pursue whatever policies of subversion, aggression and expansionism they wanted anywhere in the world,” and began to take advantage of the United States.
