A Religious way of looking at it By following through the history of the Anglo-Saxons you will see that their poetry varies by religion, Paganism and Christianity. As pagans, they believed in many gods, but they also believed strongly in pagan heroic traditions that ruled their society and literature. As Christians the Anglo-Saxons believed that suffering on earth would lead to rewards in heaven. The Head of Humbaba was written during the period of the pagan Anglo-Saxons. These Anglo-Saxons believed in no afterlife or reward in heaven, so they wanted to forever be remembered on earth for their great feats.
