The Possibility of Evil The central conflict of the story is between the main character and society. The conflict was resolved by sending letters to neighbors. The author concerns only with one conflict. The author builds up suspense by starting with the main character walking around the town peacefully. The author brings curiosity to readers by describing the main character as a very nice old lady; however, she turns out to be too involved in people¡¯s businesses. The climax of the story is identified, when she found a letter on the hall floor. The ending is very important because the conflict in the neighborhood is resolved. The ending is suitable because it fits to the style of the story, and at the same time, it concludes up the story. Also, it keeps readers think about the story. It is not a surprise ending because readers could predict, when the main character dropped the letter. The author does not prepare the readers for a surprise ending. The story reviews the ending, when she drops the letter. The main character of the story is Miss Adela Strangeworth. The author reveals character by describing the way she acts in the public and the things she does alone. There is a logical explanation for the character¡¯s action because in the story, the author tells readers that the main character wants to keep her town safe. The role of the main character is watching over the town. The author makes a statement that there is evil in everyone and need to be watched. The author uses a character, who cares very much about her town and sees the evil and tells everyone to be aware of evilness in individuals. The theme is stated explicitly. We agree with the author¡¯s view of life because there is evil in everyone in reality. It does not have any personal meaning for us. The setting of the story is a peaceful and a quiet village. The evil in everyone in the town contrasts from the setting.
