... While this type of interpretation may be fine with some Scriptures, it seems we do an injustice to the words of Jesus when we do not recognize His humor. In his article, “The Humor of Jesus of Nazareth”, Professor Viney applies his own terminology to this interpretive strategy of discovering Jesus’ wit and calls it desobrietization of the Scriptures. Recognizing that Jesus is the Christ, the author’s goal is to point out that Jesus was also very human; in fact he was not only God, but also man. As we look at Christ in this context, we may not see his words as hysterically funny, such as a comedian’s might be, but it does seem that Jesus understood what it was to have joy and to experience gladness. ... Offering no sure solution to the reason Jesus is almost always portrayed as sober or pictured not smiling, Professor Viney does suggest that it could be due to people’s need to see him as a spiritual leader and that especially in the Middle Ages people found laughter or humor to be incompatible with God, and therefore Christ.
