How women have changed through the twentieth century Women’s rights, positions and freedom have changed dramatically throughout the twentieth century. At the turn of the century women had very little freedom and independence and very few rights. Their roles were very limited to the home environment. It all started to change during the First World War. When the men went to war the woman had to take over all the jobs the men did. It didn’t seem to make that much difference, but it did gain them the right to vote and to be employed. Then during the Second World War they had to do the men’s jobs again. In 1945 women were internationally recognized by the United Nations Organization, which gave them equal rights with men.
