comparison

, I intend to compare the denominations of The Church of Scotland , and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints . I have chosen these particular denominations as I have had an experience of both, ranging from attending services/meetings, and talking with people who are representative of both the ‘sects’. I intend to examine two aspects from Smarts dimensions - these being the material and doctrinal dimensions of Smart’s theory - as I feel that the dimension of material covers the outer appearance of the churches, and the doctrinal, the inner most feelings and beliefs of the members. In effect, these dimensions can scratch the surface, and dig deep, providing a wide comparison of the denominations. The first area of Smarts dimensions I shall examine is the material aspect, focusing on the visual, tangible articles that can be found within the makeup of the churches, including the buildings, artwork, and icons. The buildings, or meeting houses, of the Latter Day Saint church (Mormon Church), are generally smaller than those of the Church of Scotland (Kirk), due to their congregation sizes, of approx 80-120 persons. The buildings are a modern, simple design, modern in that the church has been established in the U.K for approx. only the last 25-30 years. In contrast, the Kirk’s buildings can be much older, capable of housing much larger congregations, and may have a much stronger architectural style. Again, this is due to the historical fact that the church has been in existence for approx four hundred years, would have had (have) congregation sizes in the mid hundreds, and would have been designed in the style of the time. The Mormon meeting houses are simplistic because the church feels that over design, and intricate ornate detail is unnecessary. The members are there to worship God, and the surroundings are of minimal importance to them. The church believes that other denominations are too focused on material design, i.e.
