Celtic missionaries

St Vincent De Paul Purpose of the Society The aim of the Society is to relieve suffering. Material or moral help is given through person-to-person contact by members to individuals or families. Assistance is essentially local. It is adapted according to the particular needs, places, and circumstances. Vincentains seek through prayer, meditation on scriptures and Church teachings, through their daily lives and in their relationship with those in need, to bear witness to the love of Christ. The Society does not attempt to convert the needy to Catholicism, nor does it limit its aid to Catholics. Vincentians, therefore strive to foster, to develop, and to favor all means by which the fundamental virtues of faith and charity can be kept alive within us and around us. History of the Society A 20-year-old college student began the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Paris in 1833. Trocaire Trócaire has worked in Iraq since 1991 and for the past 12 years the agency has worked with Caritas Iraq and other partners to support the poorest and most vulnerable people. Trócaire has funded 21 projects which ranged form restoring water systems for 300,000 people to emergency healthcare and supplementary feeding programmes for 30,000 mothers and children. Trócaire’s Director, Justin Kilcullen, stated: “Today we stand in solidarity with the people of Iraq, ordinary people, except that for the past twelve years and more they have suffered like few other nations have suffered on this earth. Today they continue to suffer as they wait in their homes for the bombs to rain down upon them. If it happens we will face a humanitarian disaster. Food supplies will be cut off from the 11 million people who depend on them. Millions will be uprooted from their homes, water supplies and sanitation systems will be destroyed. Thousands, maybe tens of thousands will die and hundreds of thousands will be wounded. Nothing can justify the slaughter of innocent people that is about to be perpetrated.” MISSION Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland. It was set up by the Irish Catholic Bishops in 1973 to express the concern of the Irish Church for the suffering of the world’s poorest and most oppressed people.
