The Cohesive Ministry of the Holy Spirit
“What we need then, and what the world is waiting for, is the Son of God, borne witness to and revealed in all his radiant beauty of the witness of the Holy Spirit, as he energizes with and through the saints that make up the holy and mystical body, the church. ... The ministry of the Holy Spirit connects God’s greatest gift, Jesus Christ, with the legacy left by that gift, the church. Through the exploration of four of the many ministries of the Holy Spirit, one is able to uncover corollary evidence of this often understated connection. ... That connection is the Holy Spirit. ... The angel answers by explaining to Mary that, “the Holy Spirit would creatively bring about the physical conception of Jesus. ... The word for “Spirit,” pneuma is related to the word pnoe, which means “wind” and also “breath. ... The Spirit is coming upon these men and changing them. ... I Corinthians 12:13, Paul says, “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into the body…; and we have been all made to drink into one Spirit. ... Both Christ’s birth to a teenage virgin and the transformation of a group of followers into a church body of leaders were brought about through the ministry of one entity: The Holy Spirit. ... The significance of this correlation is that it shows the Spirit was integral at the beginning of Christ’s existence on the earth as well as the beginning of the church’s. Without the Spirit, Christ wouldn’t have come to be, and subsequently neither would the church. It proves that the Spirit was not some advent to the ministries of Christ and the Apostles, but rather the driving force behind their actions and creation.
Identification and authenticity are two very important factors in ministry. ... Christ’s earthly ministry began when he publicly showed Himself as the one anointed by God and worthy of the title Messiah. When the Holy Spirit descended upon Christ in the form of a dove, God was letting the world know who Jesus was and why He was going to be able to do the things He would do and why He could claim the things He was going to claim. The Spirit’s entry into Jesus authenticated His ministry. ... ” Those Old Testament verses, specifically the Isaiah passage, prove the Holy Spirit’s objective at Jesus’ baptism.
