“Evangelism is the proclamation of good news to lost sinners – that Jesus Christ died for their sins, that he rose again, and that he is willing and able to save all those who want to turn from their sin (repent) and put their trust in him as Lord and Saviour. ... Among many Christians this causes a problem when the question is addressed to children, “at what age can a person be born again”, consequently should we evangelise to them? ... In a paper written on this subject he records that a study was conducted in a group composed of Southern Baptist evangelists, Pastors, Ministers of Education, Theologians and Children Workers etc in much discussion on a child and conversion. ...

So Jents thoughts on evangelising to under 12s or in early childhood are “Adults should not expect a child to be ready for the conversion experience in early childhood. ... Should preachers try to win those little children to the Lord? ... ” He and many other Christians have this thought and teaching concerning evangelising to under 12s or pre-teens. So they would obviously not see any real need for evangelising to children. Some feel that more harm than good would be the result. The survey I commented on earlier showed that 89% of the respondents agreed that many children were joining the churches in their denomination without having had a conversion experience. About 85% felt that children were interpreting some other emotional or inner experience as conversion. (P59-60) This is obviously just one of many beliefs concerning evangelising to pre-teens. ... Sam Doherty comments that “the only reference in the New Testament to the age of children trusting Christ is Matthew 18 v 6 were the Lord speaks about “one of these little ones which believe on me”.
