INTRODUCTION
The population of people dying of HIV/AIDS in the United States has been more than 600,000 cases of AIDS reported since 1981, and it’s estimated that there may currently be as many as 900,000 Americans infected with HIV today (Centers for disease control and prevention, 1999). The difficulty of dying with HIV/AIDS infection is mostly on a persons thinking and emotions. ... A person dying with HIV/AIDS may have feelings of withdrawal from family or friends for a period of time. ... Some people coping with these issues of dying with HIV/AIDS have adapted by strengths using some kind of spiritual belief (Wink, 1999).
Spirituality is a complex and multidimensional part of the human experience. When facing a terminal or life-threatening illness or dealing with grief, spirituality has been a comfort to people for thousands of years. The importance of social support, including therapy, group support, family support, and spiritual support are vital in serving people affected by HIV/AIDS virus. Implications for social work practice include: Education and knowledge on HIV/AIDS, and the importance of more social support group (addressing death and spiritual issues) and community resources.
LITERATURE REVIEW
In June, 1981, two separate groups of people were simultaneously having the same symptoms of a very different nature, in different parts of the world. ... In 1983, a name was provided for these newly found symptoms, AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). By killing or damaging cells of the bodys immune system, HIV progressively destroys the bodys ability to fight infections and certain cancers. People diagnosed with AIDS may get life-threatening diseases called opportunistic infections, which are caused by microbes such as viruses or bacteria that usually do not make the average, healthy person ill (Hooper, 1996).
The irrational stigma attached to HIV disease and AIDS, along with others fears and misinformation about how a person can become infected or transmit HIV, only adds to the pain, isolation and worries of the person and their family members. Some people choose secrecy with neighbors, friends, even relatives, rather than risk rejection or discrimination (Dunbar & Mueller, 1998). ... These are difficult decisions and people may be isolated from others when they need them most. Finally, there is the added serious problem that a person dying of HUIV/AIDS if the fact that a partner, a sibling, a parent, a child, or another relative or friend share in the feelings of loss and grief (Richards & Folkman, 1997). ...
People with HIV/AIDS can mobilize resources for coping, which can include identifying internal strengths and abilities as well as external supports, such as friends, family and social services in the community (Woodward & Sowel, 2001). For the client who has recently tested positive for HIV/AIDS and is experiencing disturbing and disorganizing emotions, some form of crisis intervention is needed.
