Have you ever had a chance to visit a church other than what you are accustomed to? I have, and it was a great experience for myself, as well as others. I had the opportunity to compare what I read about the United Methodist in my Religion in America book to the actual experience itself. The congregation of the Covenant United Methodist Church was very friendly. As I walked in, I felt extremely welcomed. The congregation was primarily caucasian. Each person that I walked by shook my hand and welcomed my fellow classmates and me. Everyone was so polite and sociable. They really made me feel like I was in the right place. During the service, they passed around an information sheet asking for my name and address. Later on that week, I received a postcard and a welcome letter. The way Covenant United Methodist Church treated me made me think of the motto on the website which states, “Open hands, Open hearts, and Open doors” (www.umc.org/index.asp). They accept people of all races. They acknowledge people, as they are, so it does not matter where they are from. That is one reason why they are known to be a global church (www.umc.org/index.asp). When I entered the sanctuary, there was music playing.
