Holi festival, also called holikotsava, is an extremely popular and very ancient festival observed throughout India. It is especially common to all sections of the people. This holiday was actually first, a special right performed by married women for the happiness and well-being of their families. Raka is the god worshipped by those women. The first day starts after the full moon , which was practiced more in the earlier days. Recently, it starts after the new moon. The full moon festival of Holika announces the commencement of the spring season. According to the stories in the Puranas and other local legends, this day is important for three reasons. The first reason was when Siva opened his third eye and turned Kamadeva, the god of love, into ashes. Second, Holika tried to kill Prahlad by taking him on her lap and sitting on a pyre of wood which was set on fire.
