In one of the world’s earliest recorded philosophical dialogues, the Indian sage Yājñavalkya pointed to the multiplicity of theological views concerning the number of gods in India. ... Some scholars and observers focus on the tremendous diversity of distinct schools of thought and religious sects that have appeared over the course of Indian history. Others prefer to specify the three or five “great” or “world” religions that have occupied the subcontinent: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam plus Jainism and Sikhism (Davis 3). Though these five religions maintain the bulk of religious belief in India, there are many other smaller, less known religions such as Zoroastrianism, as well as western religions including Christianity and Judaism. India is culturally unique and diverse due to its array of religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, and Judaism.
About three-fourths of the Indian population (approximately 70% and 700 million) describe themselves as adherents of Hinduism, the oldest continuous faith in the world. Though today Hinduism has spread to all parts of the world, taken there by Indian immigrants, Hinduism has, and will continue to have, an indelible association with India; and perhaps in no other case is the association between a faith and a land so close as it is with Hinduism (Lal par. ... Hinduism, however, does not share many of the integrating characteristics of the other religious traditions labeled the “world religions. ... Hinduism affects Indian society in many ways through its beliefs in reincarnation as well as its caste system. ... Hinduism does and will continue to have a large impact upon Indian society through its beliefs, injustices, and the large population of which are affiliated with the religion.
