Worship in Ancient Israel 1) Around 952 B.C. the Temple was the center of Israelite worship. This included not only the high priest himself but the people/congregants. The priestly descendants of the Tribe of Levi were to guard the temple while the high priest was honored with the liberty of entering the Holy of Holies and being in the very presence of the Ark of the Covenant. The people also played an essential part in worship. Gathering in the courtyard, congregants would make a sacrifice, pray, and offer thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. 2) The Hebrew priesthood was taken from the tribe of Levi (the Levites). 3) Three types of Hebrew clerics are the high priest, the regular priests, and the Levites. 4) Each cleric is assigned a particular function. The high priest is the one and only man allowed into the Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant was located.
